European Lime tends to be straight grained and pale white to light brown in colour. This wood is easy to work, being very soft and light so is ideal for carving or whittling.
Species in the Tilia genus are usually referred to as either Lime or Linden in Europe, while in North America it’s most commonly called Basswood.
European Lime is an ideal wood for woodcarvers as its soft, fine, even texture make it easy to work with. The pale, inconspicuous colour doesn’t detract from the carved patterns of the finished product which makes it easier to paint and colour.
