Woodworking Tools

As the New Year is well and truly upon us and some of our resolutions have fallen to one side it is important to Try Something New every year. Good tools are the extensions of our hands, helping us to express ourselves in the projects we create.

The craft of carpentry can find its way back to early human civilization where simple tools produced great structures and the most practical of furniture. For centuries, we have used wood to transform our lives and the vision of those who swung an axe to those who have made our cabinets all have the same things in common - skill and good tools. So we decided to have a look at what are the most important things a woodworker needs, be they a hobbyist or a professional contractor…

  1. A Note book and pencil – To design, plan and mark out.
  2. A Measuring tape – Don’t forget, measure twice, cut once.
  3. A Scribe – These handy gadgets can help save time.
  4. A Saw – A sharp blade will make life easy.
  5. A Chisel – A good set of chisels with good steel is a must.
  6. A Plane – Electric or hand? Always go for a good hand plane…
  7. A Screwdriver – Make sure they fit comfortably in your hand.
  8. A Level – A good eye will always catch you out.
  9. A Hammer – AKA the persuader “We’ll make it fit.”
  10. A Toolbox – A good robust storage box will protect your investment.

Of course everyone will have their top ten tools that they can not live without but we all agree the basics of carpentry are easy to learn with the right instruction. Buying any tools is an investment and must be correct for the job. So there is no need to get overwhelmed if you are about to tackle your first project, whether it is a DIY repair around the house our you’re going to try building a cabinet there is always someone to offer helpful advice. Books are a good scourse of information and of course we now have YouTube but if you are unsure don’t be afraid to give us a call and well will get you on your way.
